LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) – An eight-year-old suffered a partial amputation Friday after fire officials said the child was playing with illegal fireworks.

Lauderhill Fire officials said the child has a partial amputation of three fingers on his left hand and he was taken to Broward General Hospital.

The incident took place at NW 58 Terrace.

The fireworks are the kind used for large fireworks shows.

"These are the type of fireworks we have to leave to the professionals, they are nice and beautiful at a sporting event or a park on the Fourth of July, but they have to be left to the professionals," said Captain Jerry Gonzalez with Lauderhill Fire Rescue.

According to Lauderhill Fire Rescue, the child was playing with the fireworks in a backyard without any supervision.
