Six-Year Olds May Have To Strap Up In Car Seats

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – If you are a parent of a first grader, you should start preparing a speech on why they have to sit in a car seat.

That's because a proposed bill that could change the child safety seat rules in Florida has passed a key committee.

The legislation was passed Thursday morning with a unanimous vote by the state Senate Transportation Committee.

The Senate Bill (518) would require children, up to age six, to sit in an age appropriate car seat. The current law requires children up to three years old to be in a car seat.

The companion house bill hasn't been heard in committee yet. If the bill is approved by the committee, it will be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives.
