MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Police said a young boy has died after an accident in South Miami-Dade on Sunday.

According to authorities, people were mudding one and half miles east of Card Sound Road and US-1.

The owner of the Jeep Cherokee in the group said he hit a 5-foot ditch at around 1:40 p.m.

The SUV started to fill up with water, so the driver said he jumped out to free the vehicle from the mud.

The man said while he was trying to free his car he noticed his 9-year-old son was in distress.

The father said he pulled his son out of the Jeep and took him to Card Sound Road where he was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital in very critical condition.

The boy died at 7:15 a.m. on Monday.
