Chicago Bears Draft Deon Bush In Fourth Round
It's only fitting that one of Miami's hardest hitters is headed to Chicago.
Safety Deon Bush was selected by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the NFL Draft Saturday – the 124th overall pick – joining a team that has long been known for its defense.
Bush becomes the second University of Miami player picked in this year's draft. Cornerback Artie Burns was taken 25th overall in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
During his four years at UM, Bush was a productive member of the Canes secondary – starting in 32 of 45 games played and quickly endearing himself to fans with his physical play and hard hits.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety forced nine fumbles and recorded five sacks in his career with the Canes. He also had four interceptions, but Bush's talent lends itself more to being a hard-hitter able to punish receivers and help in run support.
NFL scouts praised Bush for his length and athleticism – like Burns – and his ability to deliver "jarring" hits. Bush will have to improve his ability to recognize receiver routes in coverage and be a solid tackler in the open field in addition to making the highlight hit.
The Miami Christopher Columbus high school standout is the fifth defensive player that the Bears selected in this year's draft – falling in line with new head coach, defensive-minded John Fox.
A plus for Bush's development as a pro could be the tutelage that he should receive from Bears safety and Hurricanes alum Antrel Rolle. Rolle, a 12-year NFL veteran, played seven games for Bears this past season. Bears punter Pat O'Donnell is also a Miami alum.
Three other draftable Hurricanes players are still waiting to hear their names called: receiver Rashawn Scott, linebacker Raphael Kirby and lineman Ufomba Kamalu.
