Causeway Crash Kills One, Injures Three Others

KEY BISCAYNE (CBSMiami) – One person has died, and three others are injured, after a convertible lost control Monday afternoon on the Rickenbacker Causeway.

A red Chevy convertible was travelling westbound on the causeway around 3:30 PM Monday.

The car, according to the Miami Police Department, lost control and crashed against a palm tree.

Police said that the impact was so severe that it broke the tree in half.

Moments after the crash, several Good Samaritans ran up to the car to help the four people, two males and two females, inside. They were able to help two of the passengers get out of the car.

Within minutes, according to police, the car was engulfed in flames.

The Good Samaritans were able to help all four people to safety and continued to help them until police arrived.

All four victims were taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

The driver, who police believe was possibly ejected from the car, died in the hospital.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, helped or filmed during or shortly after the crash, to contact police at (305) 603-6525 or Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS with information.
