Driver Flees, Passenger Hospitalized After Speeding Car Smashes Into Pompano Beach Home
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A speeding car slammed into a Pompano Beach home Monday morning with a mother and her infant inside the house at the time.
According to Pompano Beach authorities, fire rescue crews responded to the home at 1751 NW 2nd Terrace, at 9:20 a.m. after a blue Saturn Sky sports car drove straight into, and almost through, the house.
"The car was traveling down 17th at an extremely high rate of speed, lost control of the car and the car went straight into the house. The house is not inhabitable. A City Of Pompano Beach structural inspector has declared it not liveable," said city spokeswoman Sandra King.
A woman and a baby who were in the home's bedrooms were not injured.
Sally Schivers, who lives next door, was shocked at what she saw.
"It's not nice. Anybody could have gotten killed in there," she said.
"It was intense just to see what happened," said witness Jonathan Debreus.
The driver of the car got out and ran away.
Debreus and a few others held the passenger until the Broward Sheriff's Office and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived. The passenger was taken to Broward Health North due to injuries.
"We caught the passenger in the driveway and all of us were making sure that he didn't get away," said Debreus.
King said the car is no stranger in the neighborhood.
"Residents in the neighborhood have said that they've frequently seen this car driving recklessly through the neighborhood. So obviously it's a local car, local individuals riding in the car, but they obviously bailed out of the car and ran," she said.
The home is used as a rental and the landlord said he does not have insurance but he will try to get some kind of relief through the insurance of the driver of the car.
