DAVIE (CBSMiami) -- Two men have died after the car they were driving in was found submerged in a canal Saturday morning, authorities said.

The crash occurred at 1400 South Flamingo Road, in a small canal that runs along the road.

Davie Police said David Dobbs, 23, and Matthew Salenieks, 25, were found inside the vehicle.

"We believe the crash happened sometime last night or early this morning," said Davie Police Lt. Ed Smith. "There's guard rails all the way down Flamingo Road, so at this point it looks like the vehicle made a right turn, right at about the 1300-block, traveling between two guard rails to get into the somewhat-private neighborhood here. And they either lost control or whatever and went off the road."

Those who knew the young men were out at the scene.

"They were just good kids, good-hearted, good family," said Ted Whitlock, a friend of both victims, who said his son was David's best friend. "All around great kid. I loved him very much."
