Captain Brings His 'Flying Classroom' To Broward

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Captain Barrington Irving arrived at Royal Palm Elementary School in Lauderhill the only way he knows how - by air.

Along for the ride was Broward County Superintendent Robert Runcie and school board member Dr. Rosalind Osgood who were all treated like superstars.

"The flight was fabulous and the best part about it is landing and seeing the look on their faces. It is very exciting, definitely a life-changing moment for these kids," said Superintendent Runcie.

Captain Irving who grew up in Miami and was the youngest pilot to fly around the world solo. On Thursday, he flew to several schools in Broward County as part of his flying classroom curriculum.

"This is amazing. I've been conducting these expeditions with blank classrooms bringing them to real life like the magic school bus," said Captain Irving.

The students who are studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) have been following Captain Irving on his many expeditions around the world.

"To be here and meet them in person and answer their questions, see their projects and flying in with Superintendent Runcie and a school board member, this is where math and science should be," said Captain Irving.

Captain Irving visited several classrooms and answered questions with the hopes of empowering these little ones and make a difference in their lives.

"I was a high school football star until I met a pilot that changed my life. We want to replicate that same success for these students," said Captain Irving.
