BSO: Pompano Beach Middle School Student Arrested For 'Making Threats To Kill'

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff's Office has arrested a 14-year-old for making threats against classmates at Pompano Beach Middle School.

The teenager is in juvenile custody and will have a hearing Thursday.

According to an arrest report, the teenager posted on Snapchat that he was adding names to his "shooting list" and bringing a gun to school.

Classmates said Wednesday that the 14-year-old is often teased.

CBS4 spoke to the teenager's father and he said he believed the response was overblown.

"He's a very good boy, humble.  It's stupid things between himself and others," he said.

In recent weeks, there have been several south Florida students arrested for making school threats on social media.

Threatening to kill someone on social media is a second-degree felony. If convicted, the poster could face serious jail time.

Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony has started a campaign asking parents to monitor their children's social media activities and have direct conversations about the consequences of making threats.

He says teenagers need to realize that a threatening post could affect their future "it could affect college and employment."

"It's not a joke," he added.
