Broward School Board Revisits Search For New Superintendent After Transparency Concerns Raised

ORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The Broward School Board met Tuesday to revisit the search for a new superintendent after concerns were raised about Sunshine Law violations during a meeting last week.

How each member voted on their semifinal choices wasn't made public during the meeting. The board denied any Sunshine Law violation, but agreed to hold the meeting again to assure fully transparency.

"There was a reference to secret ballots. I take exception. There were no secret ballots," said board member Donna Korn.

After some discussion, the board has decided to interview three candidates on Wednesday.

One of the candidates is current Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright, who was an assistant superintendent in the Orlando School District before becoming a superintendent for the Oshkosh Wisconsin District.  Cartwright has been leading the district since former Superintendent Robert Runcie left after he was charged with perjury related to a criminal corruption case against a former employee.

The second candidate is Michael Gaal, a retired Air Force colonel and businessman, and Quintin Shepherd, who is superintendent of an independent school district outside Houston, Texas.

The school board will hold another meeting on February 8 to interview the two finalists.
