BCPS Awards Select School Employees For Their Hard Work

BROWARD (CBSMiami) - The job of a teacher, to guide and educate future generations, is undoubtedly a vital role. One teacher in Broward, and a few other people that hold important school-related positions, were honored Wednesday for their success.

Broward County Public Schools announced the winners of the 2014 Caliber Awards. Dr. Daniel Shapiro, of Bennett Elementary School, was honored with the title of Teacher of the Year. He's a fifth grade teacher and a guidance counselor as well.

"Educators need to remember those initial sparks that inspire them to love teaching and learning," said Shapiro. The award for Principal of the Year was given to Camille Pontillo of Coral Park Elementary. Pontillo, an educator for 30 years—including 10 years as principal, her belief is that a principal's responsibility is student achievement.

Gina Montagnino, an educator for the last 14 years, was awarded Assistant Principal of the Year. She is currently employed at Lauderhill 6-12.

Christopher Games of Broward Virtual School, a Micro-Computer Technical Specialist, was awarded School-Related Employee of the Year. He is described as a kind and considerate person who is always willing to help.
