Broward Gets $11.4 Million Grant To Make Streets Safer

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Broward streets are getting a boost thanks to a multi-million dollar federal grant aimed at making the road safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
South Florida's congressional delegation celebrated the awarding of the $11.4 million dollar Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant at a ceremony Wednesday morning in Lauderdale Lakes.
The grant will help pay for five Complete Streets projects in Broward County that include bike lanes and pedestrian walkways.
"We lead the nation in the number of fatalities, actually Broward and Miami-Dade," said Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization Executive Director Greg Staurt. "So these facilities that the federal government are allowing us to build will actually reduce the number of pedestrian accidents, as well as bicycle-related accidents."
The projects get going next year and should be finished in 2021.
