Broncos Own Record Of Most Super Bowl Losses
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – The Seattle Seahawks' demolition of the Denver Broncos was one of the biggest shellackings ever handed out in a Super Bowl. It wasn't the worst, but Denver knows about that game as well.
In Super Bowl XXIV, the San Francisco 49ers, led by Joe Montana, ran over, around, and through the Denver Broncos en route to a 55-10 mauling. The 45-point loss still stands as the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history.
Incidentally, the quarterback for that Broncos squad was John Elway, who is now the team president for Denver.
The second-worst loss in Super Bowl history was in Super Bowl XX when the Chicago Bears pounded the New England Patriots 46-10. The 36-point loss was punctuated by 300-plus pound William "The Refrigerator" Perry plunging into the end zone from a yard out on a touchdown run.
Sunday's 35 point blowout by the Seahawks tied for the third biggest thumping in Super Bowl history. In Super Bowl XXVII, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills, who were in their third straight Super Bowl, 52-17. Buffalo lost four Super Bowls in the 1990's.
Denver's loss in Super Bowl XLVIII did mark the fifth time the Broncos have lost the Super Bowl, which is the most in NFL history. Denver's overall record in the Super Bowl is 2-5, which even though they've lost five Super Bowls, is quite a testament to the franchise's ability to stay in the hunt each year.
