Brief Ground Stop Halts South Florida Air Traffic

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – All flights heading to South Florida this morning were held at their departure airport for an hour due to a malfunction at the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center.

The Air Route Traffic Control Center is separate from the tower at Miami International Airport. The ARTCC handles high altitude flights in airspace that extends south of Orlando and over the Caribbean.

The FAA said the problem that caused the issue was related to a computer issue. The FAA lifted the ground stop to South Florida around 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Traffic at all of the airports has since returned to normal.
