Boy hospitalized after being bitten by a shark off Key Largo

An eight-year-old boy was rushed to a Miami hospital Monday afternoon after being bitten by a shark near Key Largo, authorities said.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. near the Garden Cove Marina while the boy was snorkeling.

The boy sustained injuries to his leg and was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

Authorities confirmed that the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were notified following the attack.

Audio from emergency calls captured the immediate response: "It's going to be a victim of a shark bite to the leg."
