FORT MYERS (CBSMiami) -- Three suspects were taken into police custody following a high-speed chase on the open seas.

It happened early Thursday morning off Fort Myers Beach.

The Coast Guard was alerted to the theft of a "go-fast" type boat, equipped with three 300-horsepower engines, and immediately launched a search from both the air and sea to locate the vessel.

The pursuit spanned more than 345 nautical miles and 20 hours, eventually coming to an end when the suspects stopped the boat about 125 miles east of Cancun, Mexico.

Three suspects were apprehended without incident and transferred aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Marlin for transit back to authorities in Fort Myers.

Nearly a dozen different agencies joined in the investigation. They held a press conference Sunday about the incident.
