Bill Would Tighten Charter-School Approvals

LAKE WORTH (CBSMiami) - For students, getting into a charter school can be a difficult process. A proposal filed on Wednesday by a Democratic lawmaker would make it harder for charter schools to get approved to operate in the state.
The proposal (SB 254), filed by Sen. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, would place additional requirements on charter schools.
For a school to get approval, it would have to "demonstrate that it meets a specific instructional need or a need for additional educational facilities … which the local school district does not or is unable to provide to students,'' the bill says.
Lawmakers will consider the proposal during the annual legislative session that starts in March.
While many Democrats and local school officials have raised questions about the growth of charter schools in Florida, Republican leaders have strongly supported such school-choice programs.
