PORT CHARLOTTE BEACH (CBSMiami.com) – A section of a Port Charlotte beach was cleared Wednesday afternoon after what appeared to be an old grenade was found in shallow water during low tide.

A man with a metal detector found it at the Port Charlotte Beach Complex off Harbor Boulevard, according to WINKNews.com.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said it appeared to be a hand grenade from World War II. A Southwest Florida Regional Bomb Squad team was called in to dispose of it.

A beach goer said he was told by a bomb squad member that it looked like a fragmentation grenade which had a radius of about 50 feet. He added that it didn't look as if it had been in the water that long.

The sheriff's office said it is unclear how the grenade ended up on the beach.
