Back To School Sales Tax Holiday May Be Longer This Year

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — The state's annual back to school sales tax holiday could be 10 days longer this year.
A tax cut package, that would extend the popular tax holiday, is being advanced by Senate leaders. The House last week passed a $300 million tax cut bill that included only a three-day sales tax holiday.
A Senate panel voted Thursday on the proposal to hold the sales tax holiday from Aug. 7 to Aug. 16. During that time consumers wouldn't have to pay the state's 6 percent tax on clothes, school supplies and computers.
The Florida Legislature is holding a 20-day special session to pass a new state budget. State government will be partially shut down on July 1 if no deal is reached.
Tax cuts remain among the main items legislators haven't agreed on.
