DOH: 3 More Locally Acquired Zika Cases, 2 Outside Zika Zone

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Three more locally acquired cases of the Zika virus have been reported, two of which were believed to have been acquired outside the Zika zone.

On Wednesday, the department announced the new cases - rounding the total of locally acquired cases in the state to 33. Florida currently has 461 travel-related. Of all the cases, 63 are pregnant women.

The department said one of the new cases contracted the virus inside the Miami area of Wynwood. As for the other two cases, they said they believe they contracted it outside of that 1-square mile area.

The department is investigating areas in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties where local transmissions of Zika may have occurred.

Meantime, another round of spraying occurred in Wynwood on Wednesday morning.

Naled: The Insecticide Used To Fight Zika

Miami-Dade's waste management department said a plane carrying mosquito larvicide took flight just after 7 a.m.

On Tuesday, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the spraying is working where two pesticides are being used to kill both adult mosquitoes and mosquito eggs, but that's where the good news ends.

In other parts of the Zika zone mosquitoes, in particular, the breed that carries the Zika virus, are thriving.

The CDC says this is because those areas are not getting the double dose of pesticides. The department's initial advice to Miami-Dade County was a single pesticide treatment in areas that didn't have active transmission of Zika.

It remains unclear if the procedures will change.
