MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Since the firing of head coach Al Golden on Sunday night, his former University of Miami players have been vocal about how much he meant to them both individually and collectively.

The point was further proven on Monday night when Golden, just 24 hours after being let go by the school, paid a visit to defensive back Artie Burns' dying mother in the hospital.

As first reported by CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, Golden and members of his former coaching staff showed support for their player in his time of need, a touching sentiment considering the circumstances.

Burns' mother, Dana Smith, passed away early Tuesday morning.

The school set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Burns and his family, which includes two younger brothers.

In less than a day, over $40,000 has been raised.
