After Backlash, Florida Puts Limits On Standardized Testing

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) - Florida is placing limits on standardized tests that were first expanded by former Governor Jeb Bush.

The Florida Legislature sent Governor Rick Scott a sweeping bill Thursday that caps the time students spend on state-authorized tests to no more than 45 hours a year.

The measure also lets school districts move up the start of the school year to Aug. 10.

The Florida House voted 105-6 for the bill. The Senate approved it last week.

The legislation responds to a backlash that has built up in recent years over Florida's use of testing. The bill (HB 7069) also suspends the state's A to F school grading system until an independent study of the state's new standardized test is completed.
