MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- AAA auto club group is warning players of 'Pokemon Go' to train smart and not risk their life or that of others.

The 'Pokemon Go' app has become one of the most popular apps  in the last few days - prompting players to stare at their phones while walking along city streets. It's something AAA says could put people in danger if people decide to play behind the wheel.

"Trying to catch a Pokémon while behind the wheel is a major distraction and increases your risk of causing a crash," said AAA spokesman Josh Carrasco. "Put your phone down while driving. Just one quick text or glance to see the next Pokéstop could end up costing you or someone else their life."

Distracted driving is responsible for the deaths of 1 out of every 10 drivers throughout the nation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In Florida, the problem has grown to the point that distracted driving crashes account for 12.2 percent of crashes in the state adding up to more than 200 motor vehicle deaths and 39,000 injuries, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

To help drivers avoid a dangerous situation, AAA has issued tips to help drivers avoid the temptation of texting while behind the wheel.

  • Silence your phone.
  • Ask for help from the passenger if you need to make a call or text.
  • Ask family, friends and work colleagues to respect your commute and not contact you while you are driving.
  • Put your cellphone in the glove compartment or trunk to avoid the temptation.
  • Download a safety app that will lock your phone while you're driving.
