Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived to heavy smoke and flames behind the waterfront residence.

Fire rescue crews say the smoke was seen for miles.

"People were calling from as far as Broward Boulevard saying they could see the smoke," said Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokesperson Sandra King.

Broward Boulevard is 10 miles away.

Firefighters used foam to extinguish the blaze on a 30-foot cabin cruiser called "Prime Time."

The 60-year-old man injured in the explosion was a mechanic hired to work on the boat.

He was apparently in a daze after the blast and first responders found him wandering when they arrived.

"Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported him to Broward Health North with second-degree burns all about his body, the front of it, from face to toes," King said.

The victim is being treated at the hospital and will be taken to the burn unit at Jackson Memorial for further treatment.

Pompano Beach Fire Inspectors are at the scene determining the cause of the fire.
