6 New Non-Travel Related Zika Cases In South Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Florida Department of Health announced Wednesday there are 14 new Zika cases across the state; 8 are travel related and 6 are non-travel related.
Of the eight travel related cases, three are in Polk County, two in Orange County, one in Broward County, one in Monroe and one involving a pregnant woman. No location was given for the pregnant woman.
Of the six new non-travel related cases:
- One case is a Miami-Dade County resident that had exposure in Miami Beach.
- Three cases are Miami-Dade County residents and the department is investigating where exposure occurred.
- One case is a Palm Beach County resident and the department is investigating where exposure occurred.
- One Broward County resident tested positive for Zika and had likely exposure in Miami-Dade County. It's not believed that this person contracted Zika in Broward County.
There are also two non-Florida residents who tested positive for Zika and had exposure in Miami-Dade County.
The Zika transmission zone in Miami Beach is a 4.5 mile area within the boundaries of 8th and 63rd streets.
Earlier Wednesday, Miami-Dade officials released the exact locations where Zika-positive mosquitos were found on Miami Beach.

There are currently 115 non-travel-related Zika cases in Florida and 700 travel-related cases. Of those cases, 92 pregnant women have been infected.
Zika infections are mild for most people but can cause severe brain-related birth defects, including a dangerously small head, if women are infected during pregnancy.
