5 New Non-Travel Related Zika Cases In South Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Florida Department of Health announced Friday there are 16 new Zika cases across the state – 11 are travel related and five are non-travel related.

Of the 11 travel related cases, three in Orange, two in Miami-Dade, one in Palm Beach and five involving pregnant women. No location was given for the pregnant woman.

Of the five new non-travel related cases:

  • One case is a Miami-Dade County resident that had exposure in Miami Beach.
  • Four cases are Miami-Dade County residents and the department is investigating where exposure occurred.

The Zika transmission zone in Miami Beach is a 4.5 mile area within the boundaries of 8th and 63rd streets.

On Wednesday, Miami-Dade officials released the exact locations where Zika-positive mosquitoes were found on Miami Beach.

Miami-Dade Mosquito control released the locations where mosquitoes tested positive for the Zika virus.

There are currently 124 non-travel-related Zika cases in Florida and 711 travel-related cases. Of those cases, 97 pregnant women have been infected.

Zika infections are mild for most people but can cause severe brain-related birth defects, including a dangerously small head, if women are infected during pregnancy.
