3 Republicans Fighting In Cong. District 13 Special Primary Election

ST PETERSBURG (CBSMiami/AP) - Three Republican candidates are on the primary ballot in Congressional District 13 Tuesday all hoping to replace the late Bill Young, who spent 43 years in Congress.

The special primary election is being held to determine who will face Democrat Alex Sink and Libertarian Lucas Overby in a March 11 general election.

The three GOP candidates fighting for the spot are Mark Bircher, David Jolly, and Kathleen Peters.

Bircher is a retired brigadier general in the Marine Corps Reserve. Jolly is a longtime aide to Young. Peters is a state representative.

The congressional district encompasses almost all of densely populated Pinellas County, on Florida's Gulf Coast.

The nation will be watching the race to see if the GOP's plan to run most races in 2014 against Obamacare and nothing else will resonate with voters.
