2015 Hurricane Season Comes To A Close

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Tis the end of hurricane season!  November 30th marks the official end of the Atlantic hurricane season.

It also marks ten years since Florida was hit with a hurricane, setting a record for the longest stretch of time without one impacting the Sunshine State.

The forecast was for a less active year thanks to El Niño and cooler than average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast six to 11 storms, three to six hurricanes and zero to two intense hurricanes. The forecast was updated in August to six to 10 storms, one to four hurricanes and zero to one intense hurricanes.

Here's what happened in 2015.

There were 12 Tropical Depressions, 11 Tropical Storms, 4 Hurricanes and 2 intense hurricanes.

The closest storm to Florida was Erika. The state was under a state of emergency as the storm approached in August but the storm never made landfall.

The two intense hurricanes of the season were Danny and Joaquin. Danny reached winds of 115 mph before dry air and strong winds tore the hurricane apart near Guadeloupe in the Leeward Islands.

Hurricane Joaquin winds reached 155 mph and sat over the warm waters of the central Bahamas.
