Man Killed In Police-Involved Shooting In Kendall

KENDALL (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade Police say an officer was forced to shoot and kill a knife-wielding, 20-year-old man who was making threats to kill someone.

Detectives say the 42-year-old officer who has been with Miami-Dade Police for eight years was forced to fire his weapon after officers deployed their tasers and they either did not make contact with Osorio or they did not subdue him.

Police say they were called to the Kendallwood Villas complex at 10511 S.W. 108th Ave. just before noon after Osorio's mother called 911 and said her son was armed with a knife and making threats to kill someone.

Detective Elena Hernandez told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "The subject was armed with a knife making threats to kill. Once the officers approached the subject there was a confrontation and he was combative."

"During the confrontation the officers deployed their electronic control devices," said Hernandez. "We don't know if they made contact with the subject. We do know the subject armed himself with knives and the officer had no choice but to fire at the subject."

"From what we understand the taser either did not make contact or was not enough to subdue the subject," she said. "So the officer used deadly force."

Police said the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office would investigate the shooting, which is normal procedure.

Police said Osorio's mother and sister were at the complex but they were not injured.

Neighbors told D'Oench the incident was strangely similar to another incident that happened at the complex about a month ago in which they say Miami-Dade police responded after a report a man had stabbed someone.

"It was about 1 o'clock in the morning when my girlfriend and I came outside and saw a helicopter lingering for a good 45 minutes trying to find someone. Police told me they were trying to find someone who attacked someone with two butcher knives. We're thinking he was hiding in some apartment and they were not able to find him with all those lights."

"I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same person," said Torres. "He didn't want to get caught. He was aggressive. And police did what they had to do."

"I don't know what sort of threat the man today was posing but police officers have to come out of things safely," said Torres.

Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said police could not say if Osorio was involved with the incident from a month ago.

Other neighbors were startled to see the police activity all around the complex.

Mark Moore said, "I think it's crazy. It seems like all over the place People are doing these horrendous acts."
