MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A busy Doral strip mall turned into a crime scene Wednesday after a murder-suicide.

Miami-Dade Police say 65-year-old David Jumco of Northwest Miami-Dade shot and killed himself after opening fire on a woman who he had been living with.

Detectives identified her as 62-year-old Magaly Benitez.

Police say Benitez was rushed to Kendall Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert after being shot in the back and the head. She died at the hospital.

Doral and Miami-Dade Police were initially called to the mall after the incident Wednesday morning.

Miami-Dade Police took over the case because it involved homicides. It happened at N.W. 26th and 87th Court.

Friends tell CBS4'S Peter D'Oench that Benitez was shot after leaving her job in the strip mall at De Los Reyes Engineering and meeting Jumco.

Police say it's not clear what prompted the shooting.

Anders Rivas knew Benitez and said, "This was very unfortunate. I never thought something like this would happen. This is such a quiet and peaceful place to work."

Tony Velez said he was working behind the La Quinta Inn and Suites when he heard the shots around 10 a.m.

"It sounded like pop, pop, pop and gun noises," he said. "I was also paying too much attention to work to notice anything else. It sounded like real gun shots."

Brian Ianni was nearby and said, "I just heard gunshots. I went inside to make sure I didn't get shot."

Regina Oyarce told D'Oench that she had just arrived at work when she was startled by what was happening.

"I was walking out of a room here at work and I looked over and I saw them taking a lady out of a car," she said. "I just saw the scene and I saw a man in a car and he looked like he was dead. At first I thought it was a car accident. That was my first reaction."

Oyarce said, "I just feel sad.It is just sad to see people out there doing those things."

Miami-Dade Police detectives spent the day speaking with witnesses and those who knew Benitez and Jumco.

Police said the couple had at least one child. Police initially said it was not known if they were married since they had different last names.
