How much home can you buy for $900,000?

These houses are about 4.8 times the national median home value, which is currently $187,300, according to Zillow.

In this price range, buyers in many markets can find unusual homes with a lot of character, like a two-bedroom houseboat on Seattle's famous Lake Union or a condo in a converted church in Chicago.

Of course, just because a home buyer's budget is approaching $1 million doesn't mean he or she will find a one-of-a-kind abode everywhere. In relatively pricey markets like the Upper West Side of Manhattan, buyers will likely find themselves limited to smaller spaces with only one or two bedrooms and few amenities.

Look in a midsize city like Nashville or Minneapolis, however, and you could get four or more bedrooms and upgrades like heated bathroom floors and multiple fireplaces.
