Young Mother Given 5 Percent Chance Of Survival After Deadly Crash Lives

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — A young mother who was given a five-percent chance of survival after being struck by a vehicle in Canyon Country says it's a miracle she's alive.

Kari Nay spent two weeks in a coma after being struck by a Toyota Corolla while crossing Sierra Highway near Scherzinger Lane in September.

She broke several bones and spent two months in the hospital, much of which was spent in critical condition.

"This whole thing. I wouldn't wish on anybody," she told CBS2's Peter Daut. "I have a whole new outlook on everything."

Prior to the crash, Nay was walking with her neighbor, 65-year-old Munir Jeryous Albichara, who died at the scene.

"I feel very bad for his family 'cause why didn't he make it with me," she said.

Nay says she's forgiven the driver who was interviewed by police but not charged.

Less than two weeks before the crash, the 27-year-old Nay got married and has a 7-year-old son.

"Something in me wanted to be here. It might have been my new husband or my son. I don't know but that's what I feel," she said.

Nay must now learn to walk again and is determined to make a full recovery with help from her family.

"It's a miracle that I'm here and I'm glad to be here. I wouldn't have it any other way," she said.

She also says she's grateful for the outpouring of love and support she's received, including from strangers. Daut reports that more than $8,400 has been donated to help pay for medical costs.
