Wrong-Way Driver Kills 2 In Head-On Collision On 91 Freeway In Riverside

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) – Two people were killed when a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on the 91 Freeway in Riverside early Friday morning.

According to California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. on the 91 Freeway at Arlington Avenue.

The wrong-way car was traveling west on the eastbound side of the freeway when he slammed head-on into another vehicle,.

Several witnesses rushed to the scene and were able to free the wrong-way driver before paramedics arrived. However, the occupants of the other car, a female driver and her passenger, died at the scene.

"I wound up getting the back window open, we got the front door open as well," Good Samaritan Kevin Brown told CBS2. "And when I looked to help the driver, I noticed she was passed away."

Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash. The suspect was booked on drunken driving charges, CHP confirmed. It is unclear if he sustained any significant injuries.

No names were released.
