Woman Sentenced After Pleading No Contest To Killing 2 Friends In 2013 Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 24-year-old woman was sentenced Tuesday for the death of two friends killed in a 2013 crash on the 110 Freeway.

Jeanette Romero pleaded no contest to two counts of vehicular manslaughter in July 2014, and was sentenced Tuesday to serve a term of two years and eight months in state prison.

Authorities say Romero had been at a club in downtown Los Angeles on Nov. 3, 2013 celebrating the birthday of 22-year-old Ana Cuadra.

Romero then drove Cuadra and three others on the 110 Freeway when her vehicle hit a curb at a turnout and veered off into a tree.

Cuadra and 23-year-old Blanca Belman-Almanza, who was riding in the passenger seat, were killed.

Romero and two other passengers were seriously injured.

"There's an opportunity here for Jeanette, through her life experience, through living through this tragedy, (she) can bring a voice to that message of 'don't drink and drive', in a way of young people speaking to young people," Rev. Dennis Gibbs said. "They may hear it in a way from someone whose actually lived through an experience like this."
