Woman Dies, 2 Hospitalized After Apparent GHB Overdose In Venice Beach

VENICE (CBSLA.com) — A 44-year-old woman died and two others were hospitalized early Sunday after an apparent overdose on GHB, known commonly as the "date rape" drug, fire officials say.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to a residence at 23rd Street and Speedway just before 5 a.m.

Paramedics arrived to find a 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman in a hot tub who were non-responsive. They were able to regain pulses on both victims, who were hospitalized in critical condition, LAFD spokesperson Margaret Stewart said.

A 44-year-old woman was transported to an area hospital in full cardiac arrest but did not survive, according to Stewart.

Homicide investigators were called to the scene. They wouldn't say whether the victims took the drug intentionally. They also didn't release the identity of the woman who died, only saying that all three victims were from the Los Angeles area.

The investigation is ongoing.
