Woman Accused Of Grabbing Police Baton Makes Deal For Probation

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A mentally ill homeless woman who authorities say picked up a police baton as officers scuffled with and fatally shot a man on Skid Row last year has reached a deal with prosecutors that will keep her out of jail.

City News Service reports that Trishawn Cardessa Carey, 35, pleaded no contest Monday to obstructing or resisting a police officer. She had originally been charged with felony assault on a police officer.

Under terms of her plea bargain she'll be sentenced to three years probation and ordered to enroll in a treatment program.

She is scheduled to be sentenced April 20.

As officers scuffled with 39-year-old Charly Keunang on March 1, 2015, one of them dropped his baton.

Carey grabbed it and raised it over her head as the scuffle continued, authorities said.
