With Leak All But Capped, When Can Porter Ranch Residents Expect To Return Home?

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —  With the gas leak at Aliso Canyon all but capped and contained, the question of course now is when can Porter Ranch residents expect to return home?

CBS2's Jennifer Kastner reports neighbors are not racing to get back. They're taking a bit of a wait-and-see attitude.

Several told her that with more than two months out of their homes and varying dates they were expected to return, they are not ready to put the cart before the horse just yet.

Kastner spoke to half a dozen big moving companies and said they hadn't received a single call from anyone ready to move back.

Kastner also spoke to several people who relocated, and they told her they were far from being in a celebratory mood.

"They've lied to us from Day 1 about what's gone on back there, and we as a community have no faith in anything that they say," said Kristina Zitkovich.

Several relocated residents told Kastner they're not moving back until the state confirms the well is safe and sealed.

"As a resident, as a parent and as a business owner in town, it's nowhere near being done. This is the beginning," said Zitkovich.

Save Porter Ranch's Matt Packuko is planning a protest to win people over to the idea that the entire facility needs to be shut down.

Kastner also showed a graph from a private research film -- Argos Scientific -- that has been testing the air in real time. Around 8 a.m. Thursday, the graph shows levels of methane all but flat-line after the well was capped.

A graph from the South Coast Air Quality Management District shows a drop off around the same time.

SoCal Gas says heavy liquids have been pumped into the well to plug it up. Concrete will be added next to cap the leak for good. State regulators will then confirm the well is permanently sealed.
