Wilshire Boulevard To Be Closed For Purple Line Construction Over 22 Weekends

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A series of weekend closures for portions of Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile area are set to begin Friday night, as Metro gets ready to build the future Wilshire/La Brea Station for the Purple Line Extension subway.

During each weekend, Wilshire will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday. According to Metro, the work will take place in three phases:

Phase 1: three weekend closures between Detroit Street and La Brea Avenue. Traffic will be detoured via 6^th St. and Fairfax Ave.
Phase 2: three weekend closures at Wilshire/La Brea intersection. Traffic will be detoured via Highland Avenue, 6^th St. and Fairfax.
Phase 3: 16 weekend closures between La Brea and Highland avenues. Traffic will be detoured via 6^th St. and Highland or 6^th Street and La Brea.

The closures will allow Metro to begin excavating a portion of Wilshire Boulevard and replace it with concrete deck panels so traffic can continue on the street amid the excavation work. Different portions of Wilshire will be closed for the next 22 weekends, except during Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.

Metro says this first section of the $6.3-billion Metro Purple Line Extension Project will add nearly four miles of subway from Wilshire/Western Station with new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. It is scheduled to be operational by 2023.
