19-year-old killed in Whittier drive-by shooting

Homicide investigation underway after fatal Whittier shooting

A homicide investigation is underway in Whittier after a 19-year-old man was killed during a drive-by shooting near a strip mall on Saturday evening.

It happened at around 5:30 p.m. in the 10000 block of Mills Avenue, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Details surrounding the incident remain scarce as the investigation got underway, but deputies said that they arrived and found the victim, who hasn't yet been publicly identified, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite attempting life-saving measures, the victim was declared dead at the scene.

On Monday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Adrian Coreno.

"Investigators learned three individuals were walking northbound on Mills Avenue when an occupant from a passing vehicle fired shots at them," the release said. "The suspects fled the scene, in their vehicle, southbound on Mills Avenue."

The two other victims, also unidentified, were unharmed in the shooting, deputies said.

There was no information provided on a suspect in the incident, which detectives are investigating as possibly being gang-related.

Anyone who knows more was asked to contact LASD's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
