What You're Eating: Lunar New Year Eats

Ring in 2014 for a second time! Lunar New Year officially begins on January 31st, and for the Year of the Horse, a few restaurants in Los Angeles will offer special menus or meal deals in anticipation of the celebration. There are several places featuring special menus for the occasion. Make room in your calendar to check out a few of these restaurants.

Chi Lin is one of the newest, upscale L.A.-based Innovative Dining Group properties. The restaurant will offer a three-course "Emperor's Menu" dinner conceptualized by Executive Chef Tyson Wong for the Chinese New Year. For $85, choose from the house soup, Dragon Lobster with forbidden rice or hand pulled noodles, Peking Duck and assorted sweets for dessert. Reservations are recommended. The menu will be available through Thursday, February 13th.

Wolfgang Puck's Downtown L.A. eatery has an eight-course menu plus an amuse bouche sampling to start the meal. Dishes include "Hot & Sour" Oxtail Soup, Crispy Skin Sea Bass, Szechuan Style Beef Tenderloin and Mandarin Orange with Coffee Ice Cream. While you're there, take a peek at the Wishing Tree for blessings of prosperity for the year. The cost is $175, and the menu will be offered through Friday, February 14th. Reservations recommended.

There are several Hakkasan restaurants in locations around the world, and now L.A. can boast its own. The restaurant will offer an assortment of a la carte entrees featuring a dim sum platter, Pork Trotters with Black Moss, Braised Chinese Cabbage, Jumbo Prawns with Long Beans, Black Sesame and Chocolate Dumplings and more. The cost per plate starts at $18, and the menu will be offered through Saturday, February 8th. Call Hakkasan for reservations.

From January 31st through February 28th, take advantage of bibigo's three-course prix fixe Seollal Supper featuring its signature Steamed Bun, Braised Short Ribs and Korean Pancake for dessert. An optional $10 à la carte item is the celebratory Tteok Mandu Guk--dumpling rice cake soup--that represents well wishes and good fortune for the beginning of the year. The cost for the three-course meal is $25 per person. For an extra $3, add on the soju pairing for each course. This special menu is only available at the Beverly Hills location.

Cafe Sierra will feature a weekend food celebration available January 31-February 2. Saturday, February 1st is the only day to take advantage of the champagne brunch from 11a-2:30p for $36 per adult. If you can't make it during the day, try the dinner buffet with seafood and prime rib. Dinner hours are 6-10p on Friday and Saturday and 5-9p on Sunday. The cost for adults is $56.
