Whale Carcass Keeps Coming Back
NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A whale seems to be haunting southern California beaches, as its carcass repeatedly washed up on local shores.
Its latest appearance came Sunday, when it turned up at Newport Beach.
Lifeguards roped the 22 ton carcass Saturday, and gave the whale its fourth outbound tow.
The dead 45-foot humpback, nicknamed Wally, was first found at Dockweiler State Beach near Playa del Rey July 1.
It was towed out to sea by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, but ocean currents pushed it toward Huntington Beach. The body got a second tow off San Pedro Wednesday.
Friday, the body washed up near LAX and was towed a third time.
The cause of death for the humpback has not been determined, but parasites were found in its intestines.
