Man wounded after West Hollywood shooting, deputies still searching for alleged gunman

West Hollywood residents living on edge after pair of apparently random shootings in week's span

A man was hospitalized after a shooting in West Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon and Los Angeles County deputies are still searching for the alleged gunman.

It happened at around 12:10 p.m. in the 7900 block of Norton Avenue, a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that an unknown number of rounds were fired at the location," the release said. "No additional gunshot victims were located."

Deputies said that the man was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. Witnesses said that the man was walking through the neighborhood with his family when he was apparently randomly targeted.

"The first feeling that comes to me is just incredible sadness," said Len Lanzi, the CEO of the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. "We want to make sure that this is a safe city for our residents, a safe city for businesses and our visitors."

Last Friday, about a half-mile away in the 1000 block of N. Vista Street, a woman standing on a balcony was shot by an unknown gunman, deputies said at the time. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was also hospitalized in stable condition after that incident.

Investigators have not indicated any notion that the two incidents are connected, as both investigations remain ongoing. Despite this, neighbors say the pair of incidents has them living on edge, unsure who could be targeting them as they simply go about their day-to-day lives.

"Am I next? You don't know. You're wearing some type of fancy watch and then boom, they just like shoot or rob you," said John Tohme. "It's kinda crazy, you know, to think it can happen anywhere. This is West Hollywood, it's usually safe."

Anyone who knows more was urged to contact West Hollywood's Sheriff's Station at (310) 855-8850.
