Voters Cast Ballots On Election Day In Southern California

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Voters will head to the polls Tuesday to elect school board members and city officials in dozens of districts across Southern California.

Officials said South Pasadena, West Covina, El Monte, Hawaiian Gardens, Hawthorne, Maywood and Montebello are among cities where voters will elect officials into office.

The Compton Unified School District has asked voters to weigh in on a proposed $350 million plan to upgrade and modernize schools with amenities such as science labs, research libraries, technology centers and athletic fields.

Voters have been requested to approve similar upgrades within the Walnut Valley School District, which would cost $208 million in bonds.

Meanwhile, the Las Virgenes Unified School District is expected to choose whether to extend a $98 annual school parcel tax for another 12 years. The tax would help to bolster local educational funding.

Residents in Hermosa Beach are expected to weigh in on a proposal to increase the city's hotel bed tax from 10 to 12 percent.

Ballot measures in San Marino include the extension of a public safety tax for paramedics, fire and police services in addition to a utility users tax.

In Malibu, residents will decide whether to approve a development plan that would allow for the development of a 38,000-square-foot grocery and retail center.

Proposed changes for the process of hiring a city manager will be decided in West Covina.
