Violent Crime, Public Safety Top Issues At Van Nuys Town Hall Meeting

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — Violent crime and public safety were top issues at Wednesday night's "State of Public Safety" town hall meeting in Van Nuys.

LAPD leaders met with the community to talk about their concerns and ways to curb crime.

KCAL9's Juan Fernandez reports it was a packed house and the information residents received from the LAPD was positive - violent crimes and property crimes are down year to year, according to police.

However, the fight to continue to keep the trend going is far from over.

"My concerns are for the children of North Hollywood and their safety," one resident said.

"Pedestrians are the number one issue. Many of them are just unaware of what is around them," another resident added.

Others expressed feelings their concerns were being ignored.

However, with 2 million people living in San Fernando Valley, city leaders say it is easy for some to believe that not everyone's voices are being heard.

"Right now as we stand here today, this is the safest the city's been in my lifetime," L.A. City Councilmember Paul Krekorian said.

Krekorian reiterated that by working together, city leaders can ensure all residents' concerns are counted.

"We're going to keep at it and keep driving crime down until we feel the bad days of '80s and '90s are a distant, distant memory," he said.
