Van Nuys pedestrian struck and killed by hit-and-run driver, Los Angeles police say

Suspect arrested in Van Nuys deadly hit and run

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Van Nuys on Monday night, according to Los Angeles Police Department officers.

The crash happened at around 10:05 p.m. near the intersection of Sherman Way and Sepulveda Boulevard, police told CBS LA. Upon arrival, they found a pedestrian, only identified as a man in his 30s, dead at the scene. Investigators believe that he was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a man driving a white Mercedes-Benz.

Police later said a suspect was arrested in North Hollywood around 11:15 p.m. in the 6000 block of Alcove Avenue in North Hollywood. After a crime broadcast was issued to other law enforcement, police pulled over a vehicle that matched the damage and debris connected to the Van Nuys incident, they said.

The suspect has been identified as 30-year-old North Hollywood man Jose Maranon.

"The investigation revealed that Maranon was driving at an unsafe speed and under the influence," an LAPD release shared on Tuesday evening said. "He was arrested and transported to Van Nuys Jail where he was booked for one count of 187(a) PC - Murder."

Maranon's bail was set at $2 million.

Aerial footage showed a large section of the street blocked off by police tape near a McDonald's restaurant. A white canopy covered the spot where the pedestrian's body was located.

Anyone who knows more was urged to contact LAPD's Valley Traffic Division Detective Barragan at 818-644-8028.
