UPS Facility In San Bernardino Evacuated When Package Turns Up Addressed To Terror Suspect
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A package addressed to Syed Farook, accused along with his wife of murdering 14 people and wounding 21 others in a terror-related attack Wednesday, turned up Friday at a UPS facility in San Bernardino.
The facility at Victoria and Tippecanoe Street was evacuated as a precaution.
CBS2's Rachel Kim said the bomb squad was called into to check the package.
The facility is only a few blocks from the scene of Wednesday's massacre.
Just before 11 p.m. Friday, San Bernardino's police chief tweeted that the package was deemed safe and posed no threat to the public.
An officer on scene told Kim that the bomb squad didn't have to detonate the package. An X-ray revealed that the parcel contained clothing.
All of the evacuated employees were told to return to work once the facility was given the all-clear.
Earlier, the package was returned to the facility when a driver realized the package was addressed to the killer at his Redlands home.
The clerk reported that the package came from Sears.com.
Selena Esparsa, a UPS driver, said the package was in a routine UPS letter box.
"It was small," she said.
Her reaction when learning who the package was for? "It was eerie," she said, "it just happened and it hit so close. It's scary."
