Underwater Treadmill Giving Dogs New Leash On Life

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (CBSLA.com) — Most dogs don't enjoy going into the water, but for at least one canine, it's water that's helping him walk again.

Bond, age 2, is recovering from a back injury thanks to underwater physical therapy at Purdue University.

Veterinarians there say their new underwater treadmill helps the animals feel lighter, making it easier for them to lift their hips without pain.

For Bond, he's now able to walk on his own just five weeks after undergoing surgery and rehabilitation.

Other dogs like a Labrador Retriever named Charley and an Airedale named Force are also reaping the rewards, according to a news release issued by the school.

The veterinarians say the benefits of the underwater treadmill go beyond the physical.

They say it's also helpful for animals who have suffered neurological damage.
