Ugly Side of Humanity Targets Habitat for Humanity In Hemet

HEMET (CBSLA.com) — Thieves have been stealing materials and supplies from a construction site in Hemet, where Habitat for Humanity volunteers are building house for a single mother.

Koka Lakshman, a volunteer, said the site has been broken into six times. He said the thieves have stolen materials from a garage.

Up to $7,000 worth of materials was taken, including the air conditioning condenser and copper wires, which had been ripped off the house.

"They're also destroying the walls. So, we have to redo this siding here and everything else," the volunteer said.

All the burglaries have delayed the project by several months. Now, sensors have been installed on all the windows to prevent further thefts.

Lakshman said the thieves seemed to have been coming through the back. So, volunteers also raised the fence to deter future break-ins.
