UCLA Student Burned In Science Class Experiment

WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com)  —  A UCLA student sustained burns to his face and neck Saturday when a convection oven for a science experiment exploded, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

The unidentified student also suffered a chest injury, according to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The incident  happened about 6 p.m. in a laboratory on the second floor of the school's six-story engineering building, Humphrey said.

The student was in fair condition, Humphrey said.

The lab was isolated as an investigation into the incident continued this evening, but there was no fire, no formal evacuation and no outstanding hazard or danger, he said.
