U.S. Navy Seal Killed In Parachute Training Exercise In Perris Is Identified

CORONADO (CBSLA.com) — A U.S. Navy Seal killed Wednesday during a parachute training exercise in Riverside County has been identified as a 29-year-old man from Colorado.

Special Warfare Operator 3rd Class Jason Kortz of Highlands Ranch, Colo., died March 18 from injuries sustained during the accident in Perris.

Kortz enlisted in the Navy in 2012 after graduating from boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill. In 2014, he completed additional training and was subsequently assigned to a West Coast-based Seal team.

"Jason distinguished himself consistently throughout his career. He was the epitome of the quiet professional in all facets of his life, and he leaves an inspiring legacy of natural tenacity and focused commitment for posterity," said Capt. Todd Seniff, Commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group One.

"Losing such a promising special operator is a tragedy, not just for his family and the Naval Special Warfare community, but also for this Nation who needs men of such uncompromising character in these uncertain times," Seniff added.

Kortz earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree from the University of Denver.

He is survived by his wife, parents and brother.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
